Spot Valley High School, named after the St. James community in which it is located, opened its doors to its first set of students in September 2005, with six Grade 7 streams and two Grade 9 streams. An academic staff of fourteen, under the leadership of Principal, Miss Doreth Chambers, had charge of a student body of three hundred and fourteen. Vice Principal, Mrs. Angella Williams was appointed on January 01, 2007. The official opening of the school took place on March 16, 2007. Our first school Board Chairman Mr. Fred Smith is an outstanding businessman and son of the soil. By the beginning of our third year, the academic staff had grown to forty-two, the support staff (administrative and ancillary) numbered twenty-one and our student body, now ranging from Grade 7 to Grade 11, stood at one thousand and eight.  Within our first three years, we produced the male parish champion speller in the National Spelling Bee Competition; we advanced to the third round in the National School s' Debate; our school gained third place in the Annual Junior Mayor Competition, with our student receiving the prestigious Donald Colomathi Trophy for best presentation; and our Visual Arts students won five national awards and gained first place in the Jamaica National Photography Competition.

In sports, one of our students was selected to play for Jamaica on the national girls' football team and scored three goals for the Three of our  girls qualified for the International Children's Games country in two matches and traveled to San Francisco to participate in the girls' football
competition in these Games, while one boy competed in the 100  meters, Class 3 race in the same Games.

In the area of culture, our first three years saw us participating in the national HIV/AIDS Lessons for Life Competition, in which we won first place for our drama presentation and gained fourth place overall. In addition, an original song, entered in the St. James HIV/AIDS competition gained third place.

From the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission's (JCDC) competitions we won seven gold medals, ten silver medals, ten bronze medals and four certificates of merit. Our participation in the 2008 Bob Marley Symposium saw our presentation gaining first place among schools from Regions 3 and 4 and our entry into the Spanish Festival saw us winning bronze in the first year, silver in the second and gold in the third year.

In our second year we also participated in the 4H Achievement Day activities. We won three second places, three third places and
placed fourth overall in the parish.

The school has also been involved in community outreach. We have an annual Christmas treat for the elderly and shut-ins and
from time to time throughout the year, they are visited and given gift packages. In addition, our Key Club has adopted the Spot Valley Basic School.

Within our first three years, we have had remarkable success in various areas, and as we await the results from our first batch of
students to sit the Caribbean Examination Council's (CXC) examinations, we renew our pledge to educate our students for empowerment and excellence.

The Sixth Form Programme was introduced in September 2010 with a group of twenty-five (25) students. The programme is supported by students from this as well as from neighbouring High schools. The Technical Advance Programme - TAP was introduced in 2011 to capture our students who are skills oriented. Those students were given the opportunity to continue their education by attempting another skill through HEART Trust NTA and or one or more additional subjects at CSEC, City & Guilds and CCSLC in this sixth year at high school.

Ms. Doreth Chambers, Pioneer Principal at Spot Valley High School, went on leave on January 01, 2014 and retired from the school officially on August 31, 2014. She served the institution well and will be long remembered for her invaluable contribution  to education generally and Spot Valley High School specifically for the first seven years and four months of its existence. Mrs. Angella Williams acted as Principal from January 2014 to August 2015.  The school keeps abreast with National and International Events, hence it was no surprise when the official observance of National Tree Planting Day was observed at Spot Valley High on October 4, 2013. The Minister of Water, Land, Climate Change and Environment was the Guest Speaker while other Civic Officials brought greetings. The trees planted on that day were donated by the Forestry Department.

The first publication of the school magazine became a reality in 2014 after a committee of dedicated individuals volunteered their time and expertise in compiling this masterpiece.

Our tenth year of existence was observed throughout the 2014-2015 school year. The events included an open day showcasing students' work; a church service at The Flankers New Testament Church of God and an awards dinner to honour the persons who have been intimately involved with the school since 2005.

Our first entry in the School Challenge Quiz was accepted and the 2nd of February was the assigned for our students to face St. Catherine High. We did not win but the students expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have represented the school on the national level.

The school has established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the Sporting arena and our Female Basketball Team has held its own; dominating the Western region for over three (3) years; posing a strong competitor in the National League as well.

Mr. Richard Thompson was appointed Principal in September 2018 and he continues to build on a solid foundation that was laid by his predecessors. We will continue to record the history of our beloved Spot Valley High as the Journey continues.

AT PRESENT

The curriculum Was broadened to create new pathways and opportunities for students with diverse abilities to gain successes. We have come a long way now celebrate as our students gradually gain mastery of external examinations. The Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and the Technical Advanced Programme(TAP) are reaping rewards. With pride we track our students who are successfully pursuing tertiary education, are in skills training Centres or gainfully employed. We feel a sense of triumph as our students amass medals and trophies from sports, culture and other co-curricular activities.

THE FUTURE

Our Vision- to foster excellence in the teaching/learning space in order to develop productive students. It was not just about students. It is not just about students gaining competences in the academics; it is extended to them becoming citizens of quality, honest, respectful, productive; emotionally, spiritually and physically healthy.
