Rule Book
The Spot Valley High School exists, to foster the holistic development of each student, regardless of social status or achievement level, thus enabling him/ her:
* to fit into the Jamaican and world community
* to make worthwhile contribution to nation building and
* to earn a living
Our graduates must posses most if not all of the following:

DO THE FOLLOWING:
1. Learn and demonstrate self discipline and self control through respect and concern for all persons;
2. accept personal responsibility for his/her actions;
3. be diligent in pursuing his/her studies;
4. attend school regularly and punctually;
5. comply with all the rules and regulations set by the teachers their individual classes, the school and the MOEY.;
6. respectfully obey all directions, requests and directives relative to this discipline code without hesitation or debate;
7. exercise self-control and self-discipline. Fighting, physical, verbal and/or sexual harassment, bumping or hitting of others will not be tolerated;
8. attend school and all classes on time;
9. respect their own property and that of others including the school building, equipment and grounds;
10. respect the rights and dignity of other individuals, reflecting the values of the school;
11. bring all required materials to class and complete all assigned work.
REFRAIN FROM:
12. having offensive weapons in their possession;
13. engaging in gambling, stealing, extortion or any other form of deception;
14. the use of/or possession of illegal drugs or alcohol in the school building, on the school’s grounds or at school sponsored activities;
15. the use of vulgar or obscene language, rude or insolent comments/gestures, immodest dress and inappropriate sexual behaviour;
16. leaving the school compound during school hours without proper authorization;
a. Loud and disruptive behaviour in the classroom or on the school compound
b. Trespassing on areas known to be “out-of-bound” without proper supervision
c. Not completing/doing assignments
d. Not doing assigned tasks in the classroom
e. Students loitering outside during their class time
f. Students seen outside without a pass
g. Lateness to school/and or classes
h. Littering.
j. Wearing the incorrect/ inappropriate uniform (absence of tie, tight-foot pants, shirt, socks, shoes, belt, undergarments that are visible) to school.
k. The wearing of hats, tams,sweat shirts, “hoodies”, jewellery (including earrings being worn by males) , necklace, ring, chain, bracelet, pins with pictures on them) on the school compound or on the road while they are still in uniform.
l. The wearing of hair extensions (false hair, braids), beads, (ribbons and hair clips- except brown or black), dyeing or rinsing of hair in other colours that are unnatural, make-up, nail polish, hair clips and other ornaments in the hair. Females are allowed to wear one pair of gold or silver knob earrings. The earrings should be small enough to go through a papermate pen. Anything larger will be confiscated.
m. Boys wearing cornrows, plaits, jheri curls, s-curls, mo-hawk, fade cut, crew cut, haircuts with markings and designs to the side and back of the hair. Boys hair should be low cut and properly groomed. There will be no growing of the hair to be locked unless a request is made in writing by the parent /guardian and approval has been given by the principal in writing.
n. The wearing of handkerchiefs( specifically bandana) on the face, head or hand is prohibited. Students are allowed to take regular face rags or handkerchiefs . These should be neatly folded and kept discreet.
- Verbal warning; 
- Student required to apologise in writing or verbally. (This may be done to the teacher, class or entire school); 
- Student will serve campus duty or detention; 
- Notation will be made on the students’ files; 
- Parent/ Guardian will be contacted; 
- The student will be sent home to correct the dress code violation. 
- The student shall remove all items that do not conform to the dress code of the school. Confiscated items will be labeled and retained until the end of the school term. Refusal to remove or surrender the items will require referral to the attention of Grade Coordinators. 
- Parent/Guardian being contacted. 
These offences may be of a consistent nature and therefore will be addressed by Grade Coordinators.
- Disrespect to staff members; 
- Consistently hiding away from classes; 
- Consistently arriving at school late without valid reasons; 
- Leaving school without proper authorization; 
- Consistently bleaching; 
- Bullying; 
- Extortion; 
- Use of expletives/foul language/derogatory terms; 
- Carrying/using cell-phone or other unauthorized gadgets such as gameboy, ipad,ipod, tablets, boom box, CD players during school hours on the school compound; 
- Fighting. 
- Student required to apologise verbally or in writing; 
- Student can be given time-out; 
- Detention; 
- Campus Duty; 
- The student will be given a tracking sheet to monitor punctuality and attendance to classes; 
- Parent Consultation; 
- The student will be referred to the Guidance Department; 
- Student will be suspended from regular classes and all school based activities until the normal complexion has returned. (In-House); 
- Referral for internal counselling to the Guidance Department; 
- Student will serve campus duty/detention; 
- Students will serve detention/campus duty for fighting. They will follow up with sessions at the Guidance Department on conflict resolution skills. 
These offences are criminal in intent and may warrant suspension/and or the student being reported to the police. The Disciplinary Committee will make a decision which may result in suspension. Based on the nature of the incident the student may be referred to the school board for expulsion.
- Fighting and injuring another student or member of staff; 
- Smoking; 
- Consistently involved in extortion; 
- Possession and/or use of alcoholic substances; 
- Possession, use of/or peddling drugs and other illegal substances such as marijuana, cocaine, cigarettes, tobacco, vape, lean, e-cigarette, edibles (“frass bears”); 
- Gambling; 
- stealing from other students/ members of staff; 
- Possession and/or use of offensive weapons such as firearm and/or ammunition, knife, machete, ice pick, pocket knife, ratchet; 
- Sexual Harassment; 
- Rape; 
- Engaging in sexual activities on the school compound or neighbouring communities; 
- Wilful destruction or stealing of school equipment, breaking and entering; 
- Enabling /Assisting students from other educational institutions to enter our school premises; 
- Physically abusing another student, member of staff, visitor, or volunteer so as to cause injury; 
- Using social media to slander any member of the school family or bring disrepute to the name of the school; 
- Cyber bullying; 
- Making , posting and /or circulating videos of students in uniform engaging in any sexual activity, fights, quarrels, rape, bullying, assault. 
- Parents will be contacted immediately and asked to report to the school. 
- The student will be suspended from regular classes and all school based activities for a period not exceeding 10 days. 
- The student will be referred to external agencies for further assistance and rehabilitation. 
- The matter may be referred to law enforcement for appropriate actions to be taken depending on the nature of the incident. 
- Any illegal items seized will be turned over to the police. 
- Offences ‘I’ to ‘K’ will be reported to the appropriate child’s agency. 
- Student shall repair, restore or provide restitution for any damaged or stolen property. 
- Student shall immediately remove all videos or materials from social media.
